Google's generalist assistant (gemini.google.com and the Gemini app): it answers your questions, summarizes pages and videos, writes with you and digs through the web in depth with Deep Research — offered from the free version. With the paid plans, it also settles into Gmail, Docs and Chrome, where it can browse for you.

How it works

Trigger: You ask a question or hand over a research task in one sentence — searches the web, reads your uploaded documents, writes, summarizes and creates images, and you get a documented answer, a structured research report, a summary or an image, ready to check.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Open gemini.google.com or the Gemini app and sign in with your Google account — the free version is enough to start.
  2. Ask an everyday question, or upload a document to summarize or compare.
  3. For a serious topic, launch Deep Research and read the report with its sources.
  4. If the free limits hold you back, compare AI Plus ($4.99) and AI Pro ($19.99) before paying.
⚠️ Guardrails: Gemini can be confidently wrong: verify the important facts in the sources it cites. And know where your data goes: with a free personal account, your conversations can be used to improve Google's products (can be turned off in the activity settings).

Its particular angle

Like every general-purpose assistant, it can chat, write, summarize, translate and help with code. What sets it apart: it's built into the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Docs, Chrome) and its Deep Research digs through hundreds of sources from the free version.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gemini really free?

Yes: with a Google account, you get access to Gemini with usage limits, and even Deep Research and image generation are included. Paid plans (AI Plus $4.99/month, AI Pro $19.99/month, AI Ultra from $99.99/month) raise the limits and add Gmail/Docs and Chrome.

What's the difference between Gemini and ChatGPT?

They are two competing generalist assistants. Gemini has the edge if you live in the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Docs, Chrome); ChatGPT has its own app ecosystem and its agent mode. Our generalist comparison in the explorer (Type filter: Multi-function) helps you choose.

Are my conversations used to train the models?

With a free personal account, Google may use your conversations to improve its products. You can turn off retention in Gemini's activity settings; business offers have different rules.
