Microsoft's assistant: a standalone app for your everyday questions, and above all Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook if you have Microsoft 365 — it writes your drafts, summarizes your long email threads and helps you in your spreadsheets, right where your documents already are.

How it works

Trigger: You ask, in the app or directly in Word, Excel or Outlook — writes drafts, summarizes emails and documents, suggests formulas and analyses, creates images, and you get a clean draft, a thread summary or a working formula, without leaving your software.

Step-by-step setup

  1. First try the free version on copilot.microsoft.com or in the Copilot app.
  2. If you have Microsoft 365, open Word or Outlook and look for the Copilot button.
  3. In Word, ask for a draft from a few bullet points, then have it rephrased.
  4. Check what your plan includes (credits, limits) before a big job.
⚠️ Guardrails: Don't confuse the plans: having Microsoft 365 doesn't mean unlimited Copilot — credits and limits vary by plan, and the family doesn't share the AI features. Check what your subscription includes before counting on it.

Its particular angle

Like every general-purpose assistant, it can chat, write, summarize, translate and help with code. What sets it apart: it lives where your documents already are: in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Frequently asked questions

Is Copilot included in my Microsoft 365?

In part: Personal ($9.99/month) and Family ($12.99/month) include Copilot in the apps with AI credits; Premium ($19.99/month) extends usage and advanced features. On Family, only the account holder benefits from the AI features. Copilot Pro is no longer sold.

What's the difference between free and paid Copilot?

The free version answers your questions in the app and on the web, with limits. The paid version (via Microsoft 365) puts Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, where your documents and emails are.

Can Copilot summarize my emails?

Yes, in Outlook with a compatible Microsoft 365 plan: it summarizes a long thread and suggests a reply. Always reread before sending.
