“I want a team of agents that splits up a big job”

Developers, data scientists and technical teams with a job too big for a single agent: a full market study, document monitoring, content production at scale. You need to know a little coding (Python).

Recommended agent: CrewAI
💰 $0 for the open-source framework and the basic platform (50 runs/month); enterprise platform by quote, plus the cost of the model calls. Level: Advanced 🌍 United States Free open-source framework (MIT license) and free Basic plan of the hosted platform (50 runs/month); Enterprise plan by quote

CrewAI (crewai.com), the open-source framework for assembling “crews”: you define agents with a role, a goal and tools (a researcher, a writer, an editor…), then they chain their tasks in the order you set and pass their results along.

How it works

Trigger: You launch the team's (crew's) mission — splits the tasks among the agents according to their roles, chains the steps and assembles the deliverable, and you get a complete deliverable produced by several specialized agents, with a trace of who did what.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Install CrewAI (Python) or create an account on the hosted platform to start from a visual template.
  2. Describe your agents: role, goal, personality, and each one's tools (web search, files, database).
  3. Describe the tasks in order, specifying what each agent must hand to the next.
  4. Run it on a test topic, read the intermediate outputs, then adjust the roles before going to production.
⚠️ Guardrails: Every agent you add multiplies the model calls: cap the number of steps and watch the bill from the first tests. Review the final deliverable like the work of a brilliant but hurried intern: one agent's errors get picked up unchallenged by the next ones.
🔧 Technical details
Installation
hybrid — Python framework installed locally (pip/uv); the commercial CrewAI AMP platform is offered in the cloud or on-premise.
Prerequisites
Python >=3.10 and <3.14, the uv manager, and API keys for the model providers used; Visual Studio Build Tools (C++) may be required on Windows for some dependencies.
Hardware
non_applicable
Self-hosting
partial — the open-source framework runs in your environment; the commercial CrewAI AMP suite deploys in the cloud or on-premise, according to the publisher.
License
open_source — MIT License (MIT) for the framework (LICENSE file in the official repo); the commercial CrewAI AMP suite is proprietary.
API & integrations
API: Not documented (no public REST API of the framework documented; the AMP provides a hosted control plane.) · SDK: yes — Python library (Crews and Flows), installable via uv/pip. · CLI: yes — official crewai CLI (create crew, run, etc.), installed via “uv tool install crewai”. · Webhooks: Not documented · MCP: yes — documented MCP integration (agents' mcps field in DSL, or crewai-tools' MCPServerAdapter; stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP transports).
Models
Connection to the main LLM providers via CrewAI's LLM class, with your own API keys (BYOK); local models possible, notably via Ollama (official repo FAQ). No model training or fine-tuning (official FAQ).
Data
Anonymous usage telemetry collected by default to improve the library, can be disabled via OTEL_SDK_DISABLED=true; task descriptions and agent attributes are only collected if the user explicitly enables detailed sharing (share_crew). Prompts and responses are not collected without opt-in, according to the official FAQ.
Operations
The CrewAI AMP suite adds real-time tracing and observability (metrics, logs, traces), a centralized control plane and security/governance features, according to the official README.

Not documented in the official sources: Documented limits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CrewAI cost?

$0 for the open source framework and the basic platform (50 runs/month); enterprise platform by quote, plus the cost of model calls. Free open source framework (MIT license) and free Basic plan on the hosted platform (50 runs/month); Enterprise plan by quote. Price verified on October 29, 2026.

Is CrewAI free?

Yes. Free open source framework (MIT license) and free Basic plan on the hosted platform (50 runs/month); Enterprise plan by quote.

Is CrewAI hard to get started with?

Level: Advanced. Setup takes 4 steps; the first: Install CrewAI (Python) or create an account on the hosted platform to start from a visual template.

What limits and guardrails should I know about with CrewAI?

Every agent you add multiplies the model calls: cap the number of steps and watch the bill from the very first tests. Check the final deliverable the way you would a brilliant but hurried intern's work: one agent's mistakes are picked up without question by the next ones.

Other agents for this problem

LLM Council

I want a solid second opinion before a big decision

Free software (public repository, no open-source license); you pay for the model calls (about 2 to 3 times the cost of asking a single model).

LangGraph

I want a custom agent workflow, with every step under control

Free open-source library; you pay for the model calls, and for LangSmith if you take it (free to start, then $39/user/month).

AutoGen

I want agents that debate each other until they find the solution

Free and open source; you pay for the model calls used by the agents — a multi-round debate costs several times a simple answer.

MCP (Model Context Protocol)

I want to plug my own tools and data into my agents

Free: it's an open standard, not a product; each tool you plug in keeps its own pricing.

Ollama (agents locaux)

I want agents that run at home, without sending my data to the cloud

$0: the software and the open models are free; the real cost is your computer (a good graphics card makes the models fast and pleasant).
